Theme for Close Viewing/Connections

  1. What is the difference between prejudice and discrimination?

 - Discrimination is making a distinction against a person or thing based on the group, class or category they belong to, rather than basing any action on individual merit. A simple distinction between prejudice and discrimination is that prejudice is to do with attitude, discrimination is to do with action. Courtesy

  1. Why does prejudice persist in society?

       -
Prejudice is more likely to develop and persist where: groups have different or conflicting key values • others are seen as different • people see their identity in terms of belonging to particular groups, and • their groups discriminate against others. Courtesy

  1. How do we see discrimination in Noughts and Crosses?

-  The Noughts are discriminated by their skin color, their civil rights and education, even access to healthcare.

  1. List one specific historic/current example of EACH of these types of discrimination. Include specific details:

  1. Racial - Black History Milestones: Timeline

  2. Religious - America’s True History of Religious Tolerance

  3. Gender - Gender Discrimination

  4. Sexual orientation - History of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Social Movements

  1. What is stereotyping?

In social psychology, a stereotype is a fixed, over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people. By stereotyping we infer that a person has a whole range of characteristics and abilities that we assume all members of that group have. Courtesy

  1. What is one example of stereotyping?

-Racial Profiling: One of the more common stereotype examples is stereotypes surrounding race. For example, saying that all Blacks are good at sports is a stereotype, because it's grouping the race together to indicate that everyone of that race is a good athlete. Courtesy

  1. What is Social Identity Theory?

-Social identity theory explains that derive esteem from a group that they positively identify with, therefore they favor it. They allocate more resources to the in-group to maximize the difference between their in-group and out-groups in order to achieve such identifications. Courtesy
